It’s been a busy week at the Rebecca Gordon Group! We launched two new websites this week, one for Dr. Sheila Carnett and one for LaSienne Salon and Day Spa. The links will take you to those new websites. Both websites were created using free themes from WordPress.com, just with some custom-designed features like sidebar buttons and headers. Both themes were ones we haven’t used before, but they both allowed for enough flexibility to make a business website work.
For the LaSienne site, we used a theme called Hatch that is used mostly for photographers. As you can see from the site, we really wanted to use a lot of images on the front page rather than text, so the theme worked great for that. We also really liked the ability to add widgets at the bottom of each page, like the Facebook and Pinterest buttons. That allowed us to use the entire full-width of each page.
For Dr. Sheila Carnett’s site, we used the popular Twenty Twelve theme. We were able to provide the site with it’s own feel though by adding a header and custom sidebar buttons. Previously, Dr. Carnett didn’t have her own website, and we really just wanted to create her own space online. The content is simple and to the point, but it provides all the necessary information to visitors, without getting caught up in the bells and whistles. We also really wanted people to know how to find her office, as it’s somewhat tucked away, so we created the “Find Us” page with photos we took of the building, as well as an embedded Google Map.
Last week, we told you about launching a new website for East Missouri Action Agency. Well this week, we get to announce the launch of another new website — Missouri Retired Teachers Association. This website is an example of a self-hosted WordPress site (part of our Premium web design package), using the Twenty Eleven theme.
For this site, we worked closely with MRTA staff to develop a new look. We went through several drafts of the header on the site until we reached the current design. We also custom-designed several of the buttons in the sidebar.
As a self-hosted site, we were able to incorporate a few of the plug-ins that are only available for self-hosted (or wordpress.org) sites. For example, the social media icons which turn colors when you scroll over them, as well as the 3-day forecast. Despite using a WordPress theme, with the self-hosted site we were able to incorporate several custom design changes, such as a a revamped menu bar and a different typeface.

We are thrilled to announce that the East Missouri Action Agency website we have been working on for several months was launched today! For this client, we created a wordpress.com site using a free theme called Fresh & Clean. We added some upgrades so that we were able to customize all the colors and fonts on the site (this would be our Basic Plus plan).
Some of the unique features of the site include: photo slideshows, an online store connected to Paypal to purchase prints drawn by a staff member, a password-protected staff page, an embedded Google calendar, several options for donating to the organization, and more!
